BAN ALL BLIND SPOTS is a spontaneous movement to gather 100,000 signatures in order for the problem of blind spots on lorries, coaches, buses and vans on the highways to be discussed and dealt with in the House of Commons. The movement seeks to have mandatory technology installed on vehicles to eliminate blind spots and protect cyclists and motorists.

Brief History behind this Petition

Our daughter was returning home for Christmas 2011 when a foreign HGV, travelling in the slow lane moved into her lane, caught her on her rear passenger door and spun her onto his bumper.  According to witnesses he pushed her down the motorway for some 15 seconds before stopping. (see picture below). In sign language, he said he never saw her.

Miraculously our daughter didn’t have any physical injuries but the psychological ones are real and she could so easily have been killed. Incredibly the police never attended.  The Highways Agency Officers, who did attend, said these HGVs have 2-3 blind spots and they see approximately three of this type of accident every day on the M25 alone.  The Officer commented that external cameras are the only way forward.

HE SAID HE NEVER SAW HER

How Big Is This Problem?
The number of crashes caused by blind spots has risen 48% in the last two years; 2009 – 2011. (Telegraph 22 September 2011)  Lorries / HGVs pose the most serious threat to cyclists. Injuries have trebled over the last six years according to a study by researchers at Queen Mary University, the London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and the Trauma Clinical Academic Unit at the Royal London. (The Times, March 6 2012)

Several car manufacturers already use technology to detect blind spots.
Work is ongoing to develop international standards aimed at permitting replacement of all mirrors with camera monitoring systems on HGVs. (Mike Penning MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Transport, February 2012).

Together, let’s make this a reality.

EUROPEAN LEGISLATION IS ALREADY IN PLACE

A great deal of work has already been done on this problem in Europe, but unless ALL HGVs are subject to enforcement it will be ineffectual.

The following factsheet by the European Cyclists Federation gives a good picture of the scale of the problem.

JUST HOW BAD IS THIS PROBLEM?

This video is a stark reminder of how prevalent this problem is. Think you are safe? Far from it.
